No laxative, including senna, should be used for longer than 7 to 10 days. Chronic use of laxatives may lead to “lazy-bowel syndrome” -- a dependency on laxatives to have any bowel movements as the muscles of the stomach and intestines gradually lose the ability to contract without being stimulated by the laxative.
Major Side Effects
If senna is used in high doses or for prolonged periods of time, it can lead to reduced potassium levels in the body. Low potassium levels can result in muscle weakness and potentially dangerous changes in heart rhythm.

Thank you for posting it.
The site presenting the info seems to be selling prescription drugs. That, to me, says it all right there.
The drug companies and suppliers don't want anybody using something herb based. They can't patent something that anybody can grow.
The only way to continue earning billions is to sell something that they have a patent on, like a useless drug.
So it would be logical for a web site like that to present "facts" that would scare people away from something natural and beneficial. - Re: dangers of laxatives-don't use, ... unyquity

This is a reply to # 246,799The website drugs-dot-com is not an accurate or reliable source for information on herbs, herbal preparations, natural supplements or any type of natural health.
Sadly, the information found at this site is based on FDA guidelines and FDA research.
While this site DOES provide information regarding drugs, virtually any site that openly admits their information is based on the FDA information & guidelines, is not one that most natural would even consider using as a reference.
My opinion regarding senna? It's ALWAYS a bad to become dependent upon ANY drug or herbal preparation, rather than using it to heal whatever condition is presenting (along with proper lifestyle and diet changes). But to use that drug or herb to accomplish/assist a true healing, is something that is definitely necessary.
This is ESPECIALLY true in the case of colon cleansing, flushing and health. Senna has been used for centuries to increase the peristaltic (squeezing) action of the colon. And with the basics of natural health totally dependent upon the intake and assimilation of nutrients and the efficient release of toxins & waste (which is the same for ALL life forms), if the colon becomes even slightly clogged, it can affect all other organs and fuctions in the body adversely.

This is a reply to # 246,770I also would dispute your assertations as across the board truth....
I feel if you are in a state of accelerated detoxing, it is appropriate to move the toxins out quickly. I did The Master Cleanse for 30 days this fall and each night took Smooth Move to help with the process of moving the toxins out. I did not experience any negative side effects and have not taken any since then with the exception of my weekly day of fasting, and my digestive process and elimination is better than it has been in years.
Additionally, when I was doing a holistic cancer protocol, under the guidance of a board certified naturopath, who has a remarkable cure-rate for cancer, I was advised to take a bowel cleanser, SUPER II, which has Cascara Sagrada as one of twelve other herbs. Cascara Sagrada has also inspired fear in some that once they stop, the bowels will never work efficiently again. Well, contrary to popular myth, I took one tablet twice a day for extended periods of time and once I stopped, there was never any problem with proper and appropriate bowel response. I personally feel that there are appropriate times to take bowel cleansers, ie. laxatives, and if done in conjunction with a cleansing protocol, they are beneficial.
Balance is important and research is imperative. Its true that not all things work for everyone with 100% consistency. It is helpful to those of us who have tried, and are trying, to amp up our immune systems and healing process to be open to all possible methods. Pick what works for you and blow away the proverbial *chaff*. In this case, the laxative tea is a good method for keeping the liver and kidneys flushed and unburdened....thats the ticket for me, and the thousands who have successfully done The Master Cleanse and other healing protocols using laxative tea as a *tool* without any detriment to their health.

This is a reply to # 246,770This is certainly true in a general sense.
However, fasting is a special situation requiring a daily colon cleansing routine to remove toxins quickly to avoid detox crises.
I have done very long fasts (60 days last summer), using a combination of lax tea/swf/plain water enema, and have no trouble regaining peristalsis when I return to normal eating.

This is a reply to # 246,770i specifiically remeber about the clubbing and the dependancy of the bowels on senna to keep things moving.
smooth moves is a senna blend.
personally one tea works on me for three days.
when i do it again i am going to skip it as long as i am going and if i dont i will take a tea. my body also reacts very fast to it. within 3-4 hours i have to go from one 4-6 oz tea. - Re: dangers of laxatives-don't use Karlin

This is a reply to # 246,770Too general - and there are NO ABSOLUTES [except than that.
For example, "stool softener" [docusate] is not a stimulant or an irritant type of laxative. It is an oil that softens stool.
It does say "don't take it every day" but it will not likely reduce peristalsis.
I am surprised that there are many people who use laxatives but they do not know about Docusate.
