I promised to write something as the lack of follow up on this topic is disappointing. Washing my face with salt has worked, I think. Like most people that haven't seen a doctor, I self-diagnosed my condition as
Seborrheic Dermatitis . I've had fungal infections (athlete's foot and on my chest) which looked like what I was experiencing; inflamed, discolored skin, and flaking like no other on my face, especially around my ears (common to SD).
The most popular all natural solution to SD on the internet is Coconut Oil. I did a couple of things my first few days, I started using Nature's Way unrefined organic Coconut Oil on my face night and day. I also stopped eating dairy, wheat, and sugary items to starve the yeast growth on ma face. I almost forgot, I started eating yogurt in case it was the probiotics solution that is also popular on the net. Coconut Oil did NOT work for me. Yes my face was moisturized like never before, but the rash on my face started to spread. Not good.
On day 4, I started washing my face with salt from Trader Joe's (mediterranean salt). The salt definitely helped to wash off the flaking, its course salt water, it is expected, but it stopped the SD from spreading. I also starting taking a multi-vitamin and astaxanthin daily. It started clearning up, but it was really slow, to the point where I wasn't sure if it was working.
On week 2 or 3, I decided to look up more web pages with SD and natural cures in them because the salt solution was taking too long. I came across a post that said he wiped his face with apple cider vinegar after washing. I mixed half ACV and half water for a toner solution that I would be using after washing my face with salt water. Using ACV as a toner, I started to see clearing on my face quicker than using just salt water. One last thing, I applied Selsun Blue (pyrithione zinc) onto the spots on my face and left it there for about an hour before washing off. I've done this twice, both times a burning sensation, but I think it actually did something. I once cleared a fungal infection on my chest like this so I figured I would give it a try.
It's been about a month and my face is clearing. I did a lot of things so it's hard to nail down the single cure. It definitely wasn't the coconut oil or probiotics (yogurt) because I stopped that after the third day. What I did use
Multi-vitamin
Astaxanthin
Almost No Dairy
Almost No wheat or bread items
Almost No Sugary stuff (very hard to do)
Salt wash (good for
Acne too)
Apple Cider Vinegar with Water Toner
Selsun Blue spot treatment once a week
Went all natural with my deodorant and face washes (tossed out all products containing sodium lauryl sulfate) just in case that was the issue according to other internet posts.
It's not gone, but it's clearing up slowly.
