My mom went to see a dermatologist about her peeling lips. The dermatologist said a lot of people have been having this problem due to the cold weather. The dermatologist was going to give her hydrocortisone balm or cream not to use over 1 week. When my mom said she had to watch for glaucoma, the dermatologist told her not to even use it. The dermatologist stressed not to use hydrocortisone over 1 week (even low strengths) because it can change your organs and other things in your body. It gets absorbed in your skin and ingested.
Thank goodness I have not yet used it over a week. I am quitting now. And I do not want to hear anyone saying it is only 1% hydrocortisone and a dermatologist invented it...since it is the same strength this particular dermatologist was referring to. Some doctors do not pay as much attention to side effects. Just look up the side effects of hydrocortisone.
There is ELIDEL cream that acts like a steroid, but it is not a steroid. It might be a good substitute.

Oh, I just read you are not even supposed to use this non-steroid cream long term...and it is not a steroid. So, never mind.
The dermatologist recommended Aquaphor Lip Repair.

Instead of assuming that all of the other dermatologists are wrong on this subject haven't you considered that maybe this 1 guy is wrong?
I will take the word of every other dermatologist I have spoken to/heard about over the word of this 1 guy.
Not to mention tons of literature stating that hydrocortisone in minimal potencies are safe for long term use.
I'm sure there are conflicting reports, especially by the kinds of alternative doctors and literature you prefer, but that's to be expected when it comes to pretty much any conventional treatment.

The dermatologist I saw a couple weeks ago also told me not to use hydrocortisone long term. I would only use steroid cream for 1 week while on my lips heal on 100% gluten-free diet. But not longer than that.
Most doctors do not have time to study all the side effects. Most of them promote drugs because they are taught to prescribe drugs. I am sure there is a safer remedy out there.- Re: Bad news about Cortibalm andrexr3

That's because Desonide is a relatively potent steroid.
And if hydrocortisone 1% wasn't safe for longterm use, I seriously doubt it would still be in so many over-the-counter products.
I'm definitely not sayin that there hasn't been cases of unwanted side effects while using hydrocortisone longterm.
But the same can be said for ANY treatment.

And of course the dermatologists that we see don't personally study each drug they prescribe. That would be impossible. Thats not their job. Their job is to see patients and prescribe drugs.
But they study the information of scientists and doctors who do study the drugs. Because that is THEIR job.

And usually I go with the consensus of the medical community, as opposed to thinking 1 random doctor is correct and everyone else is incorrect haha.

And like I said Andrex's derm was talking about Desonide, which is a relatively potent steroid. Which means it doesn't apply to this conversation at all. We can all agree that it's not good to use a potent steroid long term.
And even if 2 dermatologists have told you this, I have heard and read of many more that disagree. So I'm just expressing my opinion and facts that I have read/been told.
We can agree to disagree. I just dont want people to come on and read your information and wrongfully assume that this is the general concensus of the medical community.
I won't assume anything about the doctors you saw, but based on your preference towards alternative medicine I am not that surprised that one of your doctors told you this. It sounds like something an alternative doctor would say.
But even if you saw conventional doctors, it still doesn't make me believe it. FYI :)Advertisement

There may be alternative dermatologists out there, but not the ones we saw. I have limited health insurance so I do not have a choice which dermatologists I can see. Also the term "long-term" is pretty vague. When I say long-term I mean multiple months. Not years.
But obviously you were specific in saying no longer than 10 days. Which isn't even close to "long term".
My original steroid prescription was MUCH more potent than hydrocortisone 1% and the directions on the pamphlet (from the drug company not my derm.) said to use it for 2 weeks.
So for someone to say that it isn't safe to use HC 1% for even 10 days, I think is absurd.
But that's just my opinion. Along with every derm I have talked to and read about :)Advertisement

Are you sure your not describing exactly what your doing yourself? Haha
If I'm not mistaken, your the one who just came on here posting that you are stopping your HC because your derm said so haha.
And of course you will read info online that supports both sides. Much of the information online is not credible at all. Any idiot can just post info online. And even if credible sources such as your doctor say this, many others disagree.
And these are the reasons why I formulate my opinion based on multiple highly-referred and highly qualified dermatologists I have spoken to and heard from (including MikePylons).
I don't want to assume anything about your doctors but perhaps based on your health care compared to mine, the doctors you see aren't quite as qualified (absolutely no disrespect). I am very fortunate to have a successful doctor in my family.
But for you to blame me for formulating my opinion based on the info I have taken from my doctors is a clear case of the pot calling the kettle black haha.
Anyways this conversation is pointless...

I do not think you should ask a dermatologist, though. It would be best to call pharmacists at the local pharmacy. They will speak to you for free, and educate you about common side effects. If I choose to listen to a dermatologist, I am going with the one who warns me of possible side effects. Case closed.

Haha I'm not sure how the case is closed. You didn't prove any point in that whole post haha.
There's an immense difference between "warning people of POSSIBLE side effects" and telling someone not to use something BECAUSE of possible side effects.
Every drug has possible side effects. So I dont know why you think its so great that your doctor told you not to do something because of the possible side effects. If every doctor didnt recommend any medications with possible sode effects then no doctor would ever prescribe a single medication.
So I'm not sure what deserves a "case closed". Just cuz your telling me that the derm did his job of telling you possible side effects? Lets get him a cookie haha.
All my derms tell me about possible side effects but like I said if doctors never prescribed any medications with possible side effects then they wouldn't have a job. And I specifically asked my 2 derms for a steroid which is safe for long term use and they both agreed on this one. And no offense to you and yours, but I trust my derms much more than I do yours.
And again your telling me not to take the advice of my derm about this, yet your entire argument and reasoning behind bringing this up is based on what your derms told you haha. Do you not see the irony in that?

Dude that person was using it for over a year and didnt talk about any side effects. Which is just arguing against your point. Not to mention they applied it every 15 minutes!!!
And just because it was a temporary fix and didnt heal that 1 person means absolutely nothing about the next person. Come on man you've been around long enough that I shouldn't have to tell you that. That person got it from a cold sore or some sh*t and who knows what other factors were in play.
It seems to have worked for Mike and it could possibly be working for me and a few others. Not to mention the 80% success rate from his derm. So if you have a better hypothesis on the condition please let us know. But I don't consider continuously putting off a celiac diet to be a better solution :)
And as for those BS warnings you posted, your smarter than that. You can find that sh*t for any medication. That means nothing.
And AGAIN you keep talking about how I shouldn't take the derms advice and how they aren't so smart, but the whole reason you brought up this conversation is BECAUSE your derm told you. How can you continue to be so blatantly hypocritical even when I keep bringing it up haha.

This is a reply to # 2,048,184You can be so narrow-minded at times not open to damage medication can cause. One cannot see the damage medication can do to the organs. I just think people should be aware of this. If they want to take the risk, it it up to them. But you have been using these steroids, and your lips are still not totally healed after months. Besides, this Cortibalm has been making my healed skin on top lip come off.
If you think I am not wise for being cautious about side effects, then that says something about you.
