I'm only 21 (male) and my hair is still falling out due to my taking of accutane for my Acne (it has been over a year since I stopped accutane). My hair is getting way too thin now and I need to stop it before its all gone. I've been taking vitamins but my hair is still falling out. My doctor refuses to admit that my hair loss is due to the accutane, which is total BS. I am sure that my hair loss is quite different from male pattern baldness. So, has anyone had any success at stopping hairloss or regrowing hair SPECIFIC to hair loss due to ACCUTANE? I know that tons of people have had hair loss due to accutane, have any of you had any success whatsoever at bringing it to a stop? If so, please post...

PS - If anyone you know ever talks about taking accutane, just make sure they do some research first, there are so many horror stories from this drug.

MoreThis is a reply to # 146,499I took accutane for 2 years. I've been off it for 9 years now. I'm 28. I'm not sure whether or not it caused hairloss in me - my hairline has been receding ever so gradually since I was 20. I'm not convinced that accutane accelerated it, but it may have. What accutane did do to me is ruin my physical body. I have lots of inflammation everywhere in my body (hence my username). I did notice more hairloss when I started taking a multi vitamin and fish oil capsules. I took these in an attempt to reduce the inflammation in my body (I didn't know at that stage that accutane causes chronic inflammation. Make sure you avoid as much vitamin A in your diet as you can. Go to http://www.nutritiondata.com and print out all the foods that contain vitamin A. It's difficult to consume no VitA in your diet, but you should try to reduce its intake as much as possible. My sides have improved a lot since I've been doing this. Vitamin E is believed to neutralize Vit A, however, it also has a storing effect on vit A in the liver. If you've only been off the tane for 1 yr, your liver will still be loaded with vit A. What other side effects do you have? Do you have very cold hands in the winter, tight/sore muscles, stiff, painful or clicking joints, high blood pressure, raised liver enzyme levels, high cholesterol. I have all of these things 9 years after coming off the drug. My eyesight is also blurry. I need to wear glasses all the time now! Please have these tests done if you haven't already. Getting your blood pressure checked is especially important as high blood pressure can lead to a stroke. If you had a stroke, your concerns about your hairloss would seem trivial.

Thank you for your reply. I appreciate your advice on avoiding vitamin A in my diet. After reading your message, I took a look at the Vitamin A amounts in my vitamins that I have been taking (to try and stop my hair loss). I am taking 7666 IU per day in my vitamins alone. I am going to stop taking them completely and see if that makes a difference to my hair loss.
You said that my liver will still be loaded with Vit A. Do you know how long a liver will remain loaded with Vit A after stopping accutane?
As for other side effects, I've only noticed one other: increased cold sores. I used to only get one cold sore per year since I was a teenager, since I came off of accutane, I get one every 2 - 3 months, which is incredibly annoying. I had no idea why I kept getting them so often, but I recently found out that accutane can make you get more cold sores.
I'm sorry to hear about all the hardships that accutane has caused you and I should consider myself lucky that I'm only losing my hair and getting cold sores. I will get my blood pressure checked soon too.

I can't say for certain how long accutane stays in your liver. A lot depends on how much you took and for how long. A liver enzyme test should give you a reasonable idea of how well your liver is functioning. There are other liver tests that can be done as well that will give you a more definitive reflection of liver function. As far as I know, the only way of determining how much Vit A is in your liver is with a liver biopsy, which of course you wouldn't want to go through with. Even if it did show that the Vit A levels in your liver are high, the question still remains - what can you do to get rid of it. Only time will do this. Don't go in for Liver Flushes and other quick fixes. There is no quick (and healthy) way to remove the Vit A from your liver. I would suggest you take supplements that can improve your liver function such as milk thistle at a dose of approximately 200mg 3 x day. Thisilyn is excellent but rather expensive. Just make sure it is standardized to 80%. SAM-e promotes liver health and significantly elevates mood. This worked far better for me than Prozac and it has no side effects at all. The best brand I have tried by far is Mood Lift SAM-e by Naturopathica. The cheapest place I've found it on the net is at http://www.vitaminzone.com.au

Alpha lipoic acid helps the liver function more efficiently and is useful against chronic fatigue.
L-arginine helps to detoxify the liver.
The best liver detoxifier of all is LiverCare by Himalaya HealthCare in India. I found it most cheaply at http://www.webvitamins.com
This company also has a lot of other good quality and cheap supplements.
When the health of your liver starts to improve, your hairloss will slow down. A poorly functioning liver increases hairloss as well as other accutane side effects.
I would be taking MSM, horsetail extract, grapeseed extract and large amounts of biotin (5mg per day) to slow down hairloss. Also use Nizoral 2% Shampoo every day.
Rogaine and Propecia have been found by most users to be ineffective in slowing down accutane related hairloss.

i have been off accutane for almost 3 years now. i had hairloss def associated with accutane. was very obvious it was caused by the accutane. not receding hairline or baldspot but an allover sort of chemically altered kinda hair, like i had radiation treatment or something. NOT very attractive. i have struggled with this ever since and would never have taken accutane if i had known this would not go away when i stopped taking the drug. at the time the packaging said it would go away, now it says may last after u stop taking it. i think thats total bullshit. shoudlnt this company have made ppl aware of this before. great skin and no hair wouldnt have been my choice. and as for my skin, it gradually got worse again and i had to take something else but just have fucked up hair still. i must say its gotten alot better the past year but while it doesnt look so damged and the individual hairs dont feel so unlike my normal hair texture, its still very thin and prob will remain this way the rest of my life. just so u know i am a 27 y/o male without any family history of baldness or hair issues. i have 2 brothers in their 40s with no hair loss whatsoever. this def wasnt in the cards for me without accutane. i would also appreciate any info ppl might have or if they have had success with taking something to help the hair regrow. also would love to take to the guy whop started this thread. nice to know other ppl are dealing with this. i felt like a freak for awhile.- hi my sucess is super!!! This is a reply to # 146,502Hi guys. I just got off the Accutane as of October 18, 2003. My hair was falling some earlier and I asked the Derm. to stop taking it. Well they advised me to keep on it for the last month--the nurse said that my hair would grow back. I ended up taking Accutane for a full 7 months. Ignoring my gut instinct was stupid, now my hair loss has accelerated and I'm panicking. My mom prayed for me tonight and I'm calling the Derm and my general practicioner tomorrow to see if someone will give me a cortizone shot to shock my system. For now, I bought Nioxin shampoo to try and help. Who knows. Sure, my face is clear now, but it wasn't that terrible to begin with. I'll keep ya'll updated and post what the docs say tomorrow. Oh by the way, I'm 23/f with what was the best hair in the family...shiny and thick. Not so right now. This is doing a number on my self esteem.

This is a reply to # 146,526Hi, just an update note. Now it's been over 3 months since accutane and my hair is still falling every day. Some days are worse than others, but it still comes out. I had a TON of baby hairs growing in so I was all excited, only to have them all start to fall out also. Now I only have a few new hairs growing in, but they are steadily falling out. I tried Nioxin for about three weeks and I just got tired of the way the shampoo smells. I figure with what little hair I have left it might as well smell nice. Just thought I'd update. Sorry to say I don't have any good news.
