Just wondering if anyone has had the same issues as I have. Maybe this is coincidence BUT since I have had the Mirena IUD inserted I have had abnormal cervical cells, the first time resulting in stage II(the next step is cancer) and having to have a LEEP. Results since have been ok(the LEEP was 1.5 yrs ago) except I just got the results back from my yearly pap smear and it now once again has abnormal cells(not sure what stage), to be tested again in 6 months. Personally I don't want to wait another 6 months to what? see if it gets worse?! I have already had three children from a previous marriage however my fiance and I plan to have another child and I'm now really concerned about the chances if I have to have another LEEP. I talk to my Dr. tomorrow about these results and treatment. Could it be possible that the Mirena IUD hormones are causing the abnormal changes in the cervical tissue/cells???? Has anyone had a similar case, know anyone who has or have any information backing up this theory???
Please help....If this is possible, I want this toxic IUD removed so it can't do anymore damage. :(

MoreThis is a reply to # 1,051,011I've had abnormal paps snce the mirena. I've had to have two LEEPs and a big pain in the A**! I'm so glad I found this forum. Now I know I'm not crazy, haven't lost my mind and can be a normal person again. My poor kids have been raised with the Mirena Monster. It's coming out after five years next week. Wish me luck. Ask your Dr. to consider the possibility. Then, get it taken out. It is toxic!!!!!

I believe it can cause the abnormal changes in the cervical tissue/cells. I am not a doctor to know for sure. But I've got it too. I have no family cancer history, no abortion or ilnesses. Two kids. Have had Mirena for 1 year, got all the bad side effects,constant pain, Depression and e.c.t. This is a reply to # 1,051,011I just came back from my family doctor. I was not putting up with "waiting six months to pap smear test again" before doing anything. My old Gyno retired so maybe this was part of the confusion. Anyway, he agreed with my history we should not wait so he has now referred me to another gynocologist to get the biopsy and possible the leep done at the same time, if there are enough bad cells at the biopsy. I told my doctor what I have read about the Mirena, about the possibility that the hormones in the IUD could be causing the abnormal cell but he doesn't believe it's possible. He said that it would be the estrogen that could contribute and that the Mirena does not have this hormone. I don't know if I agree but to be on the safe side, when I see my Gyno, I'm getting this thing taken out! I have never had problems up until having this Mirena IUD put in. Coincidence, maybe but I am not taking the chance, especially when I'm trying to have another baby. As it is, this is a big set back and I'll have to wait to start trying until the leep is done and I have had sufficient healing time. :(

This is a reply to # 1,051,437it is common for mirena to cause abnormal pap smear results - the following site mentions it too...please print it out and give it to your consultant with the bit about abnormal pap smears underlined!! I am also listing another website which also gives some of the other side effects and issues to consider - all these things are in the prescribing info that comes with mirena to the doctors surgery - so why dont they read it??? anyway, good luck with removal. it can take many months for the body to settle down after removal, but dont give up hope! And dont take any more synthetic hormone products - they will complicate your already messed up hormonal system! Do please post back and let us know how you get on. By the way, your doc is right in so far as estrogen is often the cause of abnormal pap smears - it is the cause of most hormonal problems from endometriosis and polyps to hormone bases cancers. After researching the subject, it is my strong belief that mirena actively encourages our system to become estrogen dominant. Many of us would probably be mildly estrogen dominant before we get mirena, due to the western lifestyle that we live today (a life full of plastic food and drink containers, parabens in beauty products, caffeine and Sugar in our diets, to mention just a few things that can cause high estrogen levels), but the mirena may well also make our body quite "lazy" for want of a better word, and with mirena pumping out a chemical vaguely similar to progesterone, our own progesterone production falls well behind, because the body would not see a need to produce it. This explains why so many of us get continued symptoms for many months after mirena removal - our bodies have not managed to get natural progesterone production up again and estrogen has moved in to take it's place, to put it simply. Anyway, that is another whole story, and there is plenty of info on estrogen dominance on the net, should you wish to google it sometime. In the meantime, though, get that sucker out and you will be on step 1 of the road to recovery!!! best of luck, thinking of you. Kabel xxx

Kabel, you seem to very well informed about our friend Mirena. What if we all gather together somehow,like exchange the phone number,e-mail adresses and do something serious to stop it.
I know it's wont be easy, because it's against huge power - money. Just think, Ortho Eura was also aproved by FDI and highly recomended until wimen died using it. Should we wait till somebody dies from Mirena(maybe already is).
You know, I was breasfeeded when I've got it.For four month my baby was crazy, crying all the time, no sleeping ,eating nothing(there was no ilneses or teething). We checked the food, my milk, my body, baby's body (by doctors I mean), we went to psichiatrist. All tests are fine.We're healthy. No I know it was hormons. I quit brestfeeding march,2007, only now my baby slowly getting to normal. But he speaks only 2 words, and he is 18 month old. Who knows what can be the other side effects. I know, I myself have them all, and I migh have cancer now(will know next week).
My family history is clear, me and my husband have no mental e.c.t. deceases,our older sun's are briliant students.

This is a reply to # 1,051,892I had no idea that this was on the insert. I scanned over the "possible side effects" like I would any other medication but that was over 2 yrs ago and my doctor outright disagreed with this theory even though it's right on the "Physician Perscribing Information" sheet. It says in 5% of women using this IUD this is one of the most common side effects. I can't believe he disagreed...Unbelievable! I'm taking this with me when I get the IUD removed next Wednesday. This definitely made my decision to have this toxic IUD removed. Thank you so much for this information! It's one thing to have a theory but it's another when you actually have the facts on paper. I cannot thank you enough; now I know I'm not crazy. I wonder if once it's removed if my pap smear may go back to normal healthy cells on it's own....I'm hoping to avoid another LEEP. Eek!

This is a reply to # 1,052,005I just stumbled upon this website forum last night and I want to share my experience with Mirena IUD. I thought it was all my imagination but within the first week of having it inserted. I was bleeding irregularly, cramping, lower back pain, discharge with a strange odor, mood swings, felt very hungry all the time (my appetite was uncontrollable), I was irritable and became very depressed. I wanted it out but the doctors told me to give it six months to "adjust". Well I gave it a year and half and I was miserable! Finally made an appt. and demanded it be removed (at a different gyno. than where it was inserted). They removed it and then for the first time in my life my paps are coming back "abnormal". So I went in for a coposcopy, and they had to take a small biopsy from my cervix. The results were sent to pathology and came back as non cancerous but they wanted to see me again for a follow-up in 3 months. I went in for my followup, had another pap. Now, in just 3 months my results went from "minorly abnormal" cells to severly abnormal and they are thinking I have displaysia. I'm blown away but it's all starting to make sense with the above symptoms I've experienced since having the IUD put in! I was completely normal until I had the Mirena IUD inserted......I'm angry and think this is the cause of all my problems. I go in March 5th for further discussion on my options. I will keep this post updated on my results and would love to hear from others who may be experiencing the same thing. This is scary stuff...I KNEW that IUD was BAD from the first week they put it in. It's TOXIC....stay away from it. It has caused me so much pain and suffering. Luckily, I'm done child bearing. I have a beautiful 2 yr.old girl and sweet handsome 4 yr. old boy. I'm seriously going to discuss a partial hysterectomy as treatment. I know extreme and not recommended for woman wanting to have more children but since I'm done w/all that I don't want to worry about cervical cancer the rest of my life!

This is a reply to # 1,112,607I guess this is an update on me...Still awaiting treatment for my cervical abnormalities, I get a biopsy on March 19 which no doubt will place me at stage 1 or 2, most likely 2 like the last time and require me to have another LEEP. UGH!!! Meanwhile I've been cramping, bloating, etc, etc. I attibuted it to a variety of things BUT my GYNO decided to u/s and found a large cyst on my right ovary. I only had this Mirena taken out maybe 3 months ago & have been on the pill ever since. He's not sure when or why the cyst would have grown and cannot tell if it's filled clear fluid or blood yet(double checking with another u/s on my next cycle if it's gone down at all March 7) but I thought I'd mention it hear and see if anyone else has had cysts develop since the Mirena IUD??? I have no previous history of cysts, etc. :( I really want to have another child with my fiance come next year but at this rate I'm not sure it's possible.

Ive had my Mirena for 3 years and thought everything was just fine and dandy with it. Had no side affects or problems of any sort. Then I went for my first pap smear since getting it. After only ever having had normal smears, I now have an abnormal smear grade 3 (worst kind). Im not sure if it is cancer yet, still waiting for the biopsy. Im now wondering if it is the Mirena that has caused this. The nurse said it was quite unusual to go from normal smear result to stage 3 abnormal in 3 years. All health professionals including a good friend who is a nurse insist it wont be related to the Mirena. This is a reply to # 1,263,688First, let me tell you I am an RN at an OB/GYN office, have had a LEEP AND I have a Mirena. Ok everyone...there is a lot of Mirena "bashing" going on here and unfounded accusations that the Mirena causes dysplasia. Show me EVIDENCE. Honest to goodness evidence. You know, factual stuff. Let's be real. The most common cause of cervical cancer and cervical dysplasia is HPV. Human papilloma virus. Two out of three women have this virus. Two out of three! HPV accounts for roughly 80 - 85% of cervical abnormalities. (The other 15 - 20%? Most likely environmental. Smoking, drinking, the preservatives in EVERYTHING we eat, the crappy food most of us eat, lack of exercise, etc.....) The Mirena does NOT cause dysplasia or cancer. If you had normal paps before the Mirena was put in and abnormal pap(s) after....it's coincidental! Chances are... you had a falsely normal pap before the insertion OR your cells have changed since the insertion (most likely due to HPV). This virus is sneaky! Let me tell you - I call women every week to deliver the bad news. AND not just women who have multiple partners. Women who are in a monogamous relationship and have never had an abnormal pap OR they've actually had a negative HPV test previously. Think about it, pap smears have inherent false negatives. All tests have inherent false negatives. Your provider takes cells from the SURFACE OF THE CERVIX. Just a "blind" swipe of the cervix - it is not a magnified view (as done with a colposcope). Next, a computer probably does the initial screen of your pap - which is good I think. Probably better than solely relying on a human to review the entire slide. Cervical cancer is not genetic, it is not caused by an IUD...it is caused primarily (notice I said not soley) on HPV. Next, I'd like to address why the package insert mentions abnormal paps. It is important to take past history into account because your provider would hesitate to put in an IUD if you have an abnormal pap. The reason? It makes a LEEP harder. Much harder! The IUD doesn't cause dysplasia - I have not found ONE SINGLE shred of reputable evidence that shows the IUD causes abnormal paps. I'm not making light of abnormal pap smears. Believe me. I am a patient too. I've been there. AND...I'm not saying an IUD doesn't go without potential risks and side effects. What I'm saying is this: would it not be more reasonable to think that HPV (which 2 out of 3 women have)(THE number one cause of cervical abnormalities) is the culprit???

This is a reply to # 1,505,874I appreciate your view, but at some point you really have to take into account the overwhelming reports I have found just like everyone here, including myself.
I have the Mirena IUD for 2-3 years now, after a trip to the emergency room they finally found the culprit ovarian cysts. I have had 2-4 mm/cm (whatever the normal range of measurement is for these things show up on sonograms and CT scans for now 5 of 5 months, always in different areas and on different ovaries. I was in so much pain the day I went to the hospital I thought I had a kidney stone.
Now 2 months ago I get the news "abnormal cells" shown in pap smear. Then I have the colposcopsy done and not just minor abnormal cells, but moderate to severe. Bear in mind this is the first time EVER I have had an abnormal pap and I always have my annual pap since I was 16 (now 32).
I'm not a scientist/doctor but never did I have these problems with my previous IUD (Nova-T) and it's been one thing or another with this Mirena IUD. I didn't realize until they had placed the Mirena IUD that it did not work in the same way my previous (Nove-T) but had not only horomones but synthetic horomones. I committed to giving it a try. From the minute I found out about the Ovarian Cysts I have asked my GYN if the iud was causing this. I got the same "oh, no, no, no". I am having LEEP done in 5 days and I am scared to death. I don't care with is said you know your body, and mine is telling me that there is something in the way the horomone is realeased, areas of absorbtion, there is definetly something going on here. Too many people with the same issue and Mirena. I URGE YOU PLEASE REPORT YOUR REACTIONS TO FDA, I have posted the link below;

This is a reply to # 1,505,874I just found out that I have a first-time abnormal Pap smear at moderate growth level and my HPV is negative. I will be having e biopsy tomorrow. I am 33 and have 2 boys aged 7 and 10. I have Mirena for 7 years and a non-smoker, non-drinker, healthy eater and no cancer history in my family. I think Mirena is the most likely culprit.

HPV negative, 6 months ago, and they are now re-running the test again, because my repap came back with worse results. I wish I could find some answers.

This is a reply to # 1,263,688I have had Mirena for 3 years, after being on depo and normal paps or over 10 years. My last pap showed abnormal cells, so I had a biopsy. After 7 tissue samples were taken one came back "severe dysplasia/CIN3". My gyne recommends a LEEP which I am scheduled for Aug. 13. I have been going crazy looking up anything and everything I came across your post and can so relate. Can I please ask what has happened since? I really appreciate your input.

This is a reply to # 1,051,437I Had the Mirena for about 4 years. I had some side effects but nothing bad. I then had a bad pap, my first bad pap EVER, and had to have a colposcopy which is a biopsy of the affected spots of the cervix. The results came back that I had high and middle-grade pre-cancerous cells. I then had to have a cold-knife conization of the cervix and had my doctor remove the Mirena. He tried to convince me that mirena could not have caused it and wanted me to keep it. I still don't understand why because it's my decision and my body. After having it removed I had to had a pap every 3 months for a year and they were all good. Its been almost 2 years since having it removed and I am totally back to normal and feel fine.

This is a reply to # 1,051,011So my gf had a mirena IUD put in in may of this year. Before she had to paps done and all came back normal. After 2 weeks having it in we resumed sexua| activity. She would bleed evetytime and after a few weeks it got worse. Her gyno said it was normal for someone that never had kids. So we let it go for a little while. Kept getting worse so she went back in again and they did a pelvic scan and saw what they called an "angry bump". She had it biopsied in 5 areas. 2 weeks later results came back as full blown cancer. She saw a oncologist and he told her the same and had to have a partial hysterectomy. The docs kept saying the IUD couldn't cause it and the cancer probably was already there and the IUD or the strings could've angered it and made it cone out. But over the course of 2 months it grew from size of 2 mm. To the size of 2 thumb tips. Now you tell me that an IUD can't cause cancer?? BS! Docs put stuff in people every day that they know could cause serious issues and not tell patients the whole truth. So any one you know putting one in tell them NO!!

This is a reply to # 2,001,044Hi I am new to this forum so glad to have read this.I am a mother of 2 kids had my IUD inserted 3 yeras ago. It has been ok with the side effects that normally are said until mid last year. I haven't got periods for over 2 years now. May be some spotting sometimes but that's it. I have been experiencing bleeding after sex sometimes. It also hurts during sex in some positions. Do I need to be worried the sympyoms that I am having are scaring me.
I have been wanting to get my IUD out for a while now. Last doc I saw she couldnt find the IUD and sent me for a scan. Reports show it was in place and wondered if the doc was inexperienced. Few weeks later had my Pap results showed abnormality in my cells. I was suggested to have another pap done 3 months later, which I did this week and waiting for my reslults.
And I was there at the same time to get the IUD out from another (new family doc) she first scared me saying "oh I can't see your cervix" then she miraculously found it. Then she didn't find the IUD...
Now have an app with obgyn and see if she can get it out.
I hope the obgyn manages to get it out without any further complications.

This is a reply to # 1,051,011I just decided to due my research tonight and I am so glad I stumbled up on this forum. I also have had the same problem. An abnormal pap. I'm scheduled to go to the doctor to have a colposcopy done as well. I'm relieved to know my suspicions where correct. But, I'm angry to find out that this is indeed a problem with the Mirena and these physicians are just brushing this problem under the rug and treating women as if we are crazy or it's just a coincidence. Well, I'm not sure how everything turned out for you ladies, but I hope everything went well. I pray my situation changes for the best. Good luck to you all

This is a reply to # 1,051,011Yes had bad paps with mirena. I was so terrified I never went back and now I have to so it gets removed. I havent had sex the entire time i had it in...single mom after bad divorce so not expecting any std or such but they made me feel dirty like it was my fault for problems...not the doc his staff. I have real concerns but terrified to ask and panic attack hit when i went back so never got out of the car.
