Self initiation is a crucial factor in preparing for the work. Without it, one would be playing with fire in practicing ritual. Therefore, I must stress that anyone who is interested in this art does not take the road of haste, and forego its process. Ritual magick has its risks, even with initiation, and no guarantee is ever present in protecting oneself. It is not a path for the fearful, or faint hearted, and many who have dabbled in it unprepared have paid a price.

Work of invocation
First time, and I was terrified. My practice has always been done on my own, and alone in my dwelling, at about 2am with my temple constructed, I was ready to begin. What I had to do, I had rehearsed. Still, this was it!
Circle was cast, baninshing ritual was completed, candles were lit. Incense was ignited. Using the correspondences from Crowley`s 777, I proceeded to path work my way up the tree to my desired destination (basically, this is a visualisation exercise, with each planetary sphere having its own colours, creatures and beings. These must be visualised in correct ascending order, greeting and thanking whatever beings you meet, until you reach the sphere that governs your intent).
When I reached my visualised destination, I made an invocation to the beings of that sphere, in order to draw it down, where it would materialise behind me (I had my altar facing east).I waited, and concentrated on this intent. The candles were flickering and gutting, and I became aware of something forming behind me..right behind me.. and I felt it towering above me, as I was kneeling at this time.
I knew what was going to happen next, but this knowing could not have prepared me for it. The elemental force enters you, through the base of the skull. It possess you. What you have made is a bargain; an exchange. You use it, to propel your desire outward. And what power it has! And in exchange, it experiences your humanity. Simultaneously, you experience it. A merging takes place. You, for a brief moment, become aware of all that is. And while this was happening, I remained focused on my intent.
Then, it had gone. That was it. I pathworked my way back down the tree of life. Perfomed banishing rituals, snuffed out the candles, and doused the incense, before I left the circle (you dont leave the circle before banishing, under any circumstances!). Tidied everything away, and went to bed, thinking happy thoughts for myself.
And the ritual....did it work? Yes, it worked.
