Swimming with Sardines!
Another swim blog, I saw another first at the spot today and I marveled in the miracles of the spot. What a treat for the eye, and the skin to swim inside the flow of a school of sardines!
Date: 8/21/2005 11:39:20 PM ( 19 y ) ... viewed 1698 times Today I went down to the spot and saw the most awesome site..But first I got the opportunity to swim with my webmaster Pat, and discuss the product and services of the 3 sites we are making. I am very excited and hope to make $550-$1000 additional cash flow...I have other buddies that are have sites that they may allow me to link to. I'd have a better "optimization" (??)...Ok so we had a great time plotting and planning and being "in our heads"...Then discussing Politics so we can get ourselves all riled up...;>}Then it was time to enter the Sacred Baptismal of the "swim"!
As I walked down the stretch of rocky beach to my launch site I caught movement in the water...what the heck?
As I got in I saw flashes of silver and dark movement..it was a school - a whole college campus of baby sardines..I have never seen anything like it....In all the years I walked out to the edge Never saw a large school of sardine! This mass of swirling cylindrical movement! I stood on the edge hoping not to disturb their traverse. I stood for a full 10 minutes and still they streamed by..I walked out to thigh depth and entered the school only to be engulfed by the the swimming creatures-there was a 2 foot wide stream behind me and a 4 foot wide stream in the front of me-But where I stood they parted and delicately went around me...I stood for another 10 minutes "in the middle" of this flowing mass of baby sardines.
I watched as they streamed by, some were a greenish tint, others very dark, and some were a lighter silvery hue...I have never experienced anything like this. All in thigh deep water. I decided to swim in the middle of them, it tickled me-quite literally! We were 1/2 mile long and about 5 feet wide...I was One with the Sardines...uh?
I remember a time that I decided to snorkel at John Pennycamp underwater Park in FL, perhaps I hadn't been certified to dive on that trip, and I ended up in the gulf stream being -literally- carried south in the stream...with little stinging feeling on my arms and legs. I couldn't see any jelly babies, but I could see the barracuda school overtake me, they, just like the sardines, delicately split open to allow my entry and we all rode the gulf stream "downstream". Some of these fish were big! I'm 5'8" so these big guys were 3 ft or so, I could easily see their upper teeth in their overbite snout.
I was not at all concerned with my ride with the Barracuda. Later I was told by one of my Scripps Institute buddies, I may have well felt concern, and that I was "lucky they weren't hungry". But I can discern danger and I felt none, and since I exhibited no fear and was a pretty big fish...they did not bother with me. Except to gracefully part and "open" for me to share a spot in their traverse down the jet stream. An invitation of sorts.
It occurs to me that If I could open and give space as gracefully as my Sardine and Barracuda buddies..well the flow of life would be as unstoppable as the jet stream flowing through John Pennycamp Underwater Park. I have the sensation now, so I know what it feels like...I am learning ever so much and quickly- what a fun water life I have had!
I happy that I have swum with dolphins, swum "around" whales (this was not frightening in the sense of hostility, but in size and water displacement!)Barracuda, pilot whales, and now sardines! heheh
I am blessed by nature revealing herself to me as if I were each and every one of her Sea Creatures...She feels me as I feel Her. Primal Connection
