Adapted from The Self Factor, by Duncan Coppock (Findhorn Press,2005).
The word is out: imagery can be a powerful tool for
problem-solving, and for gaining insight and clarity around life-issues. The
technique is so simple, and the results are often amazingly helpful. You can
learn how to use it yourself. This example will show you how to do it:
Simple Solution:
Phrase your concern as a question for your unconscious mind
to help you with. In the world of imagery there are no restrictions on
what can happen or on how an object can be transformed. You simply let
your unconscious imagination do its thing and then see whether or not
it makes any useful sense to you later on.
At each stage of the process, go with the first response
that comes, even if it doesn't seem to make sense at the time. Examples
are given for each step.
1. Phrase your concern as a question.
--"How can I best develop my career?"
2. Take the first image that comes to mind.
--A yellow rose.
3. Notice as much as you can about the object, including
its condition, location, and the surroundings.
--The rose is wilting, in a small pot on a wooden table in
the corner of a dimly lit room.
4. Thank your unconscious and ask it, "What is the essence
of this image?"
--Dying from being in the wrong conditions.
5. Thank your unconscious and ask it, "What is the history
of this image?"
--When the rose was first bought, it was smaller and fitted
the pot. It was near a window and healthy. As it grew, it became too
big for the pot and no longer gets enough water. It has also been moved
to a back room with less light. It feels unnoticed and unappreciated.
6. Thank your unconscious and ask it, "What are the worst
and best case scenarios?"
--Worst case: the rose stays where it is and gets droopier
and droopier until it dies for lack of light and water.
--Best case: the rose moves and grows and blooms.
7. Thank your unconscious and ask it, "What is the best way
forward?"
--The rose rises in the air from the pot and out the
window. It goes through the window of another, nearby building which is light
and airy and sees that there is a large pot waiting by a window. The
rose gently settles in here and immediately starts to prosper. Passers by
comment on how beautiful it is and how fragrant the perfume.
8. Thank your unconscious and spend a few minutes seeing
what analogies there are with your real life concern and how you might
use the information that you have gained.
--You realize that you have outgrown your job and no longer
get the support and input that used to nourish you. You used to liase
directly with clients (the open window) and have since been promoted to
a backroom managerial role that doesn't satisfy your need to get out
there more and be hands-on. You realize that if you stay where you are it
can only get worse. The solution is not just to move within the same
company but to chage companies (i.e. changing buildings in the image)
where you have the space and support to take on a bigger role with more
contact with clients. You want to move somewhere where you are more
appreciated.
