How Consistent Exercise Gives You Better Sleep

If you want to sleep better, here are a few ways that consistent physical activity can lead to a sounder, better night’s sleep.

Sleep is something that many adults find themselves struggling with. Most people understand the importance of a good night’s rest and its powerful influence on your health, happiness and overall life; however, far too many people find themselves frustrated with the quantity or quality of their sleep. One of the key ingredients that may be missing from their day is consistent physical exercise. If you want to sleep better, here are a few ways that consistent physical activity can lead to a sounder, better night’s sleep.

Fatigue Your Body

Whether they feel themselves feeling restless or unable to quiet lingering thoughts from earlier, many people struggle with initiating the process of sleep. Physical activity can help tire you out which can help your body more seamlessly welcome a slumbering state. Start with a beginner workout at home, be consistent with your routine and make sure that you get two hours and thirty minutes of exercise each week. When you are physically fatigued, you are more likely to be able to fall asleep faster.

Regulate Your Natural Rhythms

If you find that your natural rhythm of sleep is off, getting a restful night to recharge may feel far outside of your reach. While some people turn to medication or supplements like melatonin, exercise can help to reset your body’s natural rhythms. This reset can help you stay asleep longer and improve your quality of sleep. Not to mention that combining exercise with exposure to sunlight can exponentially boost this impact. Ideally, combining your exercise routine with some form of exposure to the sunlight can boost your chances of improving your sleep, especially if you can make this change long-term.

Time Your Routine Carefully

While any form of exercise can benefit your mind, body and sleep, timing and the type of physical activity matter. While a gentle yoga practice can help your body and mind prepare to relax and rest at the end of the day, engaging in a high-intensity, interval-training activity may end up energizing you, causing the opposite of the desired effect. If you want to maximize the effect of your exercise regimen, schedule your workouts carefully. Try to engage in more physically intense activities earlier in the day and incorporate gentler activities in the evening. This timing can make the world of difference in your quality and quantity of sleep.

Add Consistency to Your Schedule

By incorporating consistent exercise into your schedule, your body begins to learn these routines. Just as sleep hygiene and morning routines matter, physical activity consistency can also prove to be beneficial. It sends cues to your body and mind at regular times, establishing a healthy routine. Not only will your body begin to crave this physical engagement, but it can also help support healthy sleep hygiene. Give your body and mind the structure that it craves with consistency in your morning, evening and exercise routines.

Manage Your Stress

Exercise is a crucial element for anyone looking for tools to healthily manage stress. Stress can often peak at the end of the day, making sleep feel impossible; however, a lack of sleep can also leave you ill-prepared to manage your stress levels. Stress and sleep also can work against one another, leading to an unhealthy cycle. If you want to break this cycle, consistent exercise can give you the healthy outlet that you have been searching for. Not to mention that regular physical activity can also boost endorphins, improving your mental health. Instead of letting your stress pile up and overflow, work it out and process it with physical movement. Be proactive in your stress management and you’ll be sure to see improvements in your slumbers.

Not only can physical activity improve your physical and mental health, but it has an endless number of benefits on your quality and quantity of sleep. Don’t let yourself suffer through fatigue and subpar slumbers when a truly restful night’s sleep is within your sights.
