When traveling, almost everyone has at least one device that connects to the internet with them at all times, whether that be a smartphone, tablet, or laptop computer. There are plenty of things to do on the internet to pass the time when traveling to a destination, and a laptop is nearly always necessary when traveling for work purposes. However, having access to public networks can leave some holes in your personal internet security and leave room for hackers and cybercriminals to slip through and potentially harm you and your personal data. Here are a few helpful tips in order to keep your connection safe while traveling for either personal reasons or business.

Practice Zero Trust

One of the easiest ways that cybercriminals are able to sneak into your internet access is through a lack of vigilance from users when logging into new networks. Therefore, utilizing zero trust architecture is one of the best ways to keep yourself safe. This essentially means never trusting networks or websites at face value and always verifying their authenticity every time you try to log in. You can do this in a number of ways, including minimizing how many networks you access and only accessing what you need. You can also make sure to give new networks the least amount of privileges possible to your device.

Be Physically Aware

Not every case of cybertheft happens entirely behind a screen. Oftentimes, there are people who decide to linger in public spaces, checking to see if anyone has a laptop or smartphone open. In these scenarios, they are also trying to look at your screen to see if they can catch any potential information that they could use to hack into your computer or phone. Therefore, it's important for you to stay physically aware of your surroundings if you're using a smart device or laptop computer in a public setting.

Keep Everything Secure

In addition to physical awareness, it's important to keep all of your belongings secure as well. Not only could this prevent an identity theft situation (by losing your wallet, ID cards, etc.), but this could also prevent data from being stolen as well by making sure your laptop or phone is in a safe, secure space. This is especially important in high-volume areas such as airports or conventions where there are so many people around that it's harder to keep track of what's in front of you, giving others the perfect opportunity to slip away with an unguarded device. To protect yourself even further, get into the habit of locking up your computer while it's not in use to stop others from getting into it without your permission.

Be Careful with Public Wi-Fi

Public wi-fi networks are a hot spot for cybercriminals since the network is accessible to the public. Therefore, it's best to practice caution and not log into anything of high importance while on public networks. This could include things such as logging into your online bank accounts or making purchases online. You can also log out of the public wi-fi network routinely and frequently, giving hackers less time to take any available information.

In conclusion, although traveling is a great way to have fun or a perfect opportunity for your business to grow, there are plenty of dangers hidden around every corner of the new networks you'll need to connect to. It's imperative for you to evaluate when to trust and when to deny, whether that be by changing your passwords frequently, using a privacy screen, or even deciding which of your coworkers or travel partners can have access to your devices. In any case, there is no such thing as being too cautious when it comes to protecting your data, so be sure to do everything you can to keep you and your information safe.
