I heard it in a Dream - "Love Hurts"
I had a dream where I heard Nazareth' singer Macafferty sing "Love Hurts" in a dressing room. It was written so well...

Let me tell you how I feel about the song "Love Hurts"...
For starters, just a little background - even though the Nazareth record jacket doesn't say so, it was actually written by a husband and wife songwriting team Bordleaux and Felice Bryant. Maybe you knew that.
Here is the scene - it is early 1950s, Felice and Bordleaux are middle aged by now, and Bordleaux is reflecting on his youth, thinking about what it is like now, in 1952, to be young.
He wants to write a song about what it feels like to be 19 years old and working your first steady job and you have your first car and you are driving around, looking good, hair slicked back and as anyone can see, you are hot stuff.
You used to be insecure, but you are getting over that now, and you feel like things are going good, you are in dependant, you have some money in your pocket.
What is missing is a passenger in your car. No girlfriend.... then you meet a 22 yr. old chick and you take her to the movies, have dinner, and within a few short weeks you lose your virginity. Sex is dangerous stuff, but you can handle it [this was before birth control and before the sexua| revolution].
The girl is all over you, and when you see her after work she comes running up to you giggling, obviously happy to see you. She really likes you!!
Now, life seems PERFECT. If life can be like this, I'll take it, wow, no doubts. Then one night after working late you are driving home and you see her with another guy, hand in hand going to the movies... You pull over and get out for a look at them.
You can't breathe. Your legs go rubbery. Your head is swimming. There is just no comprehending what you are seeing.
Women can be fickle. Men can be mean, they can be domineering and they also cheat, but when it happens to them, "women can be fickle".
The kid thought she was his for life. He was certainly willing to take her on for life, there was nothing he wanted more. What he didn't know was "anything about her" - he had no clue about real relationships, he was just glad to have a girlfriend.
This was "Love Lesson #1" for this young buck.
----
And that is where the song starts, from a young man's point of view after his first breakup.
The 2nd verse says it all:
I'm young, I know,
But even so
I know a thing, or two
I learned, from you
I really learned a lot,
Really learned a lot
Love is like a flame
It burns you when it's hot
Love hurts, ooh ooh love hurts .
Perhaps you remember how___- rod? rob? Macafferty sang it so wonderfully, his incredibly high voice so in control but sounding like it was at the edge of control, every word seemed to be emphasized, the emotion of the young buck was nailed.
The Nazareth arrangement was exactly the way Bordleaux Bryant wrote it.
In fact, it was the only song that Nazareth recorded that they did NOT write. It was like a gift to them, it establishes their claim to fame for all time. It was like they sold their souls for this one.
Why is Karlin going on about this old trashy rock ballad you ask? Ya, I know, its a bit weird... but when Nazareth was in their prime, I was listening to much different music, and this will likely be the ONLY Nazareth song I ever really listen to.
In December 2012, two months ago, I had a very vivid dream. I was in a dressing room at a live-music bar, sitting there with the entire band Nazareth when they were old and washed up. They were actually playing BARS now, just glad to be on the road and playing. "Love Hurts" was the highlight of every night, and as chatted with Macafferty the manager came and said the show would start in 10 minutes.
That was the cue for Macafferty to sing a short version of "Love Hurts" into a microphone that was hooked up to speakers in the bar, with the rest of the band recorded, like Karaoke. Macafferty was sitting 5 feet from me, looking right at me, smirking as he did his duty.
I got to listen to this song, for the first time ever in full - I had heard snippets of it on the radio I suppose, I vaguely remember it from the 1970s sometime - with Macafferty singing RIGHT THERE.
It was a dream, but it was so real, the sound of his voice was AMAZING. He even missed the entrance on the chorus, smiled, carried on. I had NEVER seen Macafferty before, but this was him in my dream, old now. Wrinkled, still had long hair though. Sounding great, just a little less great than he was 40 years ago.
I heard every note, and every word. When I woke up, I went straight to my piano, and damn if I couldn't play most of it without trying. I did find a youtube recording of it and figured out the rest of it, and now I can sing and play it right through.... except that I sound kinda silly doing it, with my voice, after Macafferty.
What a dream!! Not only did I discover "Love Hurts" but I got to hear Macafferty sing it in what seemed to be a live setting, but I also discovered who Bordleaux and Felice Bryant were. Many of their songs were recorded by famous artists; they just might be the most recorded songwriters ever, I don't know.
