Tuning Out, Turning OFF - NO MORE T.V.
Cut the cable, reject the satellite, no more TV. REVOLT!!
Date: 1/1/2013 6:54:45 PM ( 11 y ) ... viewed 8824 times Now that I have been without television for over a year - it has been 16 months in fact since I cancelled my cable - I can honestly say that although there is a WITHDRAWAL period of about 3 to 6 months, life does normalise.
When I am at other people's places, I notice that the commercials are still REALLY LOUD compared to the programs.... although in Canada our regulator for media, the CRTC, is demanding that the volume of ads be no louder than the programs, as of last year. They cannot do anything about American channels though, I suppose.
I also notice that there are A LOT of ads... I barely get interested in what I am watching, and BING!, an ad. The CRTC, as of two years ago, agreed to allow the networks and individual stations decide how many ads to run... it used to be limited to 7 minutes of ads per 1/2... now they can risk running 20 minutes of ads per 1/2 hour if they think people would actually watch.
So, I am out. Now I surf the internet a lot more, I get much much much much much much MORE ACCURATE NEWS online... wow, does mainstream news ever miss a lot. And distort a lot. And kiss ass a lot.
Last night, for fun, it being New Years Eve, instead of watching the Times Square ball fall, we had great laughs taking turns reading, out loud, the Olde Englishe of Chaucer's Miller's Tale [speaking of kissing ass... if you have read it you know what I mean by that].
NO MORE TELEVISION.
In my younger years, being more idealistic, I had every intention of raising my sons without television, or at least limiting their hours. My difficult ex-wife was a tough nut to crack, slipping the kids their TV fix whenever I was out, making me to be the ogre... yes, we divorced.
But now my son, grown, with a fine wife, told me he intends to raise his kids without TV!! At present, he has a TV in his house but claims he rarely watches it.
We both watch DVDs on our otherwise silent TV sets.
The final word on going TV free is that it is the single most revolutionary, world-changing, corporate thumbs down thing you can do. If you are onside with the OWS protests, then consider axing the TV. It really is mind-numbing and propagnadist and corporate crap.
