Gateway to Cancer - Pipe Dreams from Hell
Enbridge hid the fact that cancer causing fumes were enveloping Kalamazoo after their pipeline broke there.

"Enbridge was willing to let people think it was normal crude"
I just heard an interview on CBC radio with a lady from Kalamazoo where an Enbridge pipeline broke and spilled huge amounts of what people thought was crude oil.
She lives right beside the dam on the river, and said that it was "pure black" flowing over the dam spillway after the break occured.
Enbridge never told them it that is was not regular crude oil, but rather it was Tar Sands "diluted bitumen".
For a whole year, until this lady went to Congressional Hearings on the spill, Enbridge let the people there in Kalamazoo believe it was regular crude oil.
Diluted bitumen has benzene and other carinogenic solvents mixed in [to make it flow in the pipes], so it is "orders of magnitude" worse than regular crude oil in it's effects on human health [and worse for the environment than regular crude oil is].
"Carcinogenic solvents" means, of course, that those substances are known to cause cancer. The smell was overwhelming, their restaurant business had to close for many months, the whole area and town of Kalamazoo was thick with cancer causing fumes from this pipeline break!!
She was fighting cancer at the time. Their dog died of cancer a year later.
Tragically, there is an lot of cancer in the kids in the area now, a year later, as children are smaller the same dose of toxins is worse for them.
Whats coming in the years ahead for those people of Kalamazoo? Cancers of the everything for many of them...
Diluted Bitumen is called "DILBIT" for short.
DILBIT is what will be in the Enbridge Gateway pipeline coming through BC to the coast.
