Art: "Vision"

Often I feel as though I am "channeling" my art--the inspiration seems to "come through" me without my thinking about it. This art piece is an example of what I call "shamanic art", when the energy of Spirit is felt very strongly and a message is given.

Eco Art by mayah   "Vision" mayah(c)2012  Approximately 7" X 7"

This young girl  looks as though she is staring off into the future or into the inner realms.

Reused materials; frame from Goodwill Industries; paper scraps from other art projects; nontoxic glue

I liked the photo of the girl that came in a brochure from Doctors Without Borders--she's from Central African Republic. I put her on reused cardboard backing to make her stand out from the background and look "3-D". Behind the girl is what looks like a plant--reminds me of bird-of-paradise-- but is really a picture from a magazine of some kind of iguana with huge spikes on its back! I think the skin color and texture are fantastic!

This art took hours and hours to make--it looks deceptively simple but I kept messing with it and adding in bits here and there--the blue tissue paper scraps in the background represent Water Spirits.

I kept thinking something was missing, then had the idea of adding in the 3 cowrie shells. A couple of years ago I bought 20 cowrie shells to learn divination from a shamanic practitioner from South Africa. I never did learn to use them very well and gave it up (it's easier for me to "talk" to Spirit directly, rather than throwing shells and trying to figure out what the pattern means).

I got the inspiration to use the shells for this art. No sooner did I add them onto the art then I had a weird feeling in the pit of my stomach, and I felt strange--I had chills, and felt cold. For the next few days after the art was finished I couldn't look at it without feeling weird. I wanted to get it out of my house; I thought of giving it away.  I just wanted to get rid of it.

Four days after I made it I took the art piece and held it while standing in front of my ancestor altar. I asked the ancestors what was the message this art piece was trying to tell me:  Of course, the art piece is meant for me;  I can give it away if I want to (free will) but really I would be better served to put it on my Water Spirit altar in my bedroom so I can look at it every day to remind me not to deny my shamanic connection with Spirit. My shamanic practice is to continue to come through my art.

"Vision" now sits on my Water Spirit altar in my bedroom; she doesn't "weird me out" anymore.

Ancient Native American dwellings in New Mexico evoke a deeper connection to Mother Earth. The Pueblo peoples were adept astronomers/astrologers, and would have observed lunar and solar eclipses, such as the full solar eclipse on 11-13-2013.

Shamans travel either into the "inner" or "higher" realms of existence; the vocabulary we use is inadequate except to say that the realms are not of this earth plane of existence.
