"Fall Leaves" was done in 2008 out of tissue paper on unbleached waxed paper, glued onto scrap cardboard (I was doing "Eco Art" back then but didn't know it). I've messed around with it a lot since then and made a cardboard frame for it with the "leaves" sticking out over the edge of the frame; decided to put it in a dark brown frame that looks like tree bark; framed it off-kilter so the "leaves" would still show. Not sure I like it in the frame; may take it out again. Sigh.

I originally painted the watercolor fall leaves in 2007; the drawing hung on the wall in my dining room in this same frame. I’d used my children’s cheap old grade school watercolors. The paper was of poor quality also, with most of the watercolor soaking into the paper and seeping out the back. Needless to say, 5 years hanging on the wall in diffused sunlight did the damage; most of the color was faded out of it.

I repainted the leaves with watercolor (good quality this time) and re-inked the lines, then put a layer of nontoxic glue on the leaves to make them shiny. Cut out the leaves and pasted them on top of a reused candy wrapper. The leaves have cardboard backing and the edges are curled up, so that they pop up from the background for a 3-D effect. I put the mat board right up against the glass, leaving about a ½ inch space between it and the background and popped out the back of the frame for added depth. You can tell by the shadows cast by the leaves inside the frame that it is 3-D.


"Eco Art by mayah" utilizes recycled materials and earth-friendlier art supplies.

Homemade Art:  I buy my frames from Goodwill Industries--they are inexpensive and I like the idea of reusing frames rather than buying brand new ones.
