Art: Shaman's Journey

Shamans travel either into the "inner" or "higher" realms of existence; the vocabulary we use is inadequate except to say that the realms are not of this earth plane of existence.

Shaman’s Journey by mayah ©2012

This Eco Art piece represents the Shaman’s Journey. The shaman’s Spirit leaves the ordinary earth plane of existence, represented by the large circle in lower right with sticky dew drops on spider web; she temporarily sheds her ordinary physicality, represented by the feather left behind, and climbs up through (or down into) the higher or inner levels of existence, represented by the zigzag staircase of seed buttons. She utilizes the energies of the Four Directions-- represented by the green triangles—to fuel the journey. The pull of the earth plane of existence is strong—distractions, hunger, fatigue, doubt, and fear--represented by the smaller spider web circle upper left, yet the Shaman marshals her Will and her Power until her Spirit is completely unencumbered and free, represented by the soaring Andean condor in the upper right.

Reused materials: compostable food container, corrugated and other cardboard, paper scraps from other art projects, jute, Andean condor icon from advertisement of The Four Winds society

Found feather and seed buttons; nontoxic glue.

I like the different textures of the corrugated vs. compostable cardboard

This shows detail--the circles are cut out from a photograph of dew on a spider web; I poured glue on top to give it more texture and then placed a seed "button" on top--they are the top portions of acorns; the bottoms have been eaten by animals or insects.

Ancient Native American dwellings in New Mexico evoke a deeper connection to Mother Earth. The Pueblo peoples were adept astronomers/astrologers, and would have observed lunar and solar eclipses, such as the full solar eclipse on 11-13-2013.

This art piece is an example of what I call "shamanic art", when the energy of Spirit is felt very strongly and a message is given.
