Energy Security with Renewables
If there is a global catastrophe such as war or economic collapse, any nation will be better off having more renewable energy because it will allways be there to provide electricity, whereas oil could be difficult to keep flowing.
Imagine that the world gets itself into another big war where China is invading Japan and we all get into it. All the available oil will be going to the war machine, what precious little of it there will be when oil tankers cannot move and the Sauds are shutting in their wells until the war ends. Energy will be in short supply.
Or, a meteor slams into the planet and there is global upheaval from the dust cloud, with crops failing and temperatures falling. Some oil supplies might continue flowing, but it would be very limited and expensive due to the unreachable demand for restricted supply.
Or, an economic catastrophe such as is being hinted at by experts who see another "credit crunch" happening in the next few years. It will be like the 2009 calamity, but there won't be government bailouts and many more banks will fail, the "real economy" will falter. International trading, including oil and gas, will become difficult as currencies are devalued and credit is not forthcoming and many nations will not be able to import any oil.
In each of those cases, nations with substantial renewable energy installations will still have their energy supply.
Renewable energy is MUCH MORE SECURE as compared to the flow of oil and gas. They both depend on a grid of sorts, but the electric grid tends to have more options for rerouting around trouble spots as compared to an oil pipeline or ocean going tankers. The renewable energy infrastructure is totally within national borders, and so international conditions won't affect it as much as with oil and gas.
Those are the advantages for energy security that renewables provide, but there is another security aspect to it - the solar and wind and geothermal energy that is "onsite", such as solar panels on your house. Anyone who is producing their own electricity is obviously going to have the most secure supply of electricity. If they are smart enough to own an electric car, they will be doing okay while everyone else is scrambling.
So lets just get going on creating renewable energy. The more we have, the better off we will be. Every nation that serves it's people would see that having substantial renewable energy supplies is a good thing because of the security of their energy supply.
Renewables will also stabilise energy prices, and there will be a lower overall cost for energy over the long term.
Also, there won't be oil slicks on the beaches of the the world when we have enough renewable energy supply. The oceans will be less acidic [a major problem creeping up on us right now]. Global warming emissions will be reduced. The smog will lift and our health will improve. Too bad we have let the oilmen run the show for so long - when will we take back our world?
