Truth Telling for Healing Support
Loving communications as part of the healing support that is needed for family members (and others).

(Today is also the 58th anniversary of his marriage to my mother.) Some days ago I had heard my father say he would start his new lifestyle program as of today. When I came to visit him in the hospital he offered his personal notebook for me to review and also said he would be starting his new program as of his birthday in May. Some moments later my mother arrived in his room and soon an opportunity presented itself in the conversation for me to offer input on what appeared to me as his postponement.
So I spoke the truth as I saw it. I said I didn't think it was in his best interest to delay his start-up date. I also said I had observed him postponing similar start-up dates over the years and that I was concerned he could be perpetuating a similar behavior. (Quite bluntly he has been a compulsive procrastinator when it comes to making certain lifestyle changes i.e. losing weight.) I spoke with all my loving kindness and said that today is the day to commit to the new and that as soon as he commits he will be empowered because the "power of now" will support him. He heard me! He agreed! He said today is "day one" of the rest of his life. I was relieved to here him say that and also that my mother was a witness as well.
We are his team support and he really wants our team support so I believe he will remember to be "impeccable" with his word. I may want to verify this with him tomorrow so that I have no assumptions about what I have heard. Although I don't take his declaration in a personal way I have received his acceptance of my offer to support his new lifestyle over the two-month course in this initial recovery phase that is now underway.
Lifestyle changes (and especially ones involving dietary and eating modification) can be some of the most difficult challenges for people to face and especially for elders! Knowing that I realize the essential requirement for a firm commitment. Making his kind of commitment before one's family members can be all the more effective as it now includes accountability. Accountability is where the team members can come into a deeper supportive relationship with the family member who wants to make important life changes. This is the key for those people who realize that they need family support. My role will be a nutrition-therapy chef for my father and that benefit will include my mother as well. In fact I will be making nourishing meals as natural medicine for all three of us to enjoy together. I believe (and I know my father agrees with me here) that this kind of support can be a model of health recovery for others and their families as well!
Healing is much more likely to occur and can be more effective when love is included as part of the good medicine program. Love includes understanding and understanding requires really good communications. Fortunately I have really good communications with my father now.! In fact the quality of our communications over the past two weeks has transformed our relationship from tolerable to one of real unconditional love, mutual respect and deep appreciation. I believe that everyone would benefit from this kind of quality communication!
If there is any healing needed in any of your relationships then I would encourage you to nourish your communications with that individual. First listen to that one. Listening is most of what good communications is all about! When you practice being a good listener you have the gift of healing! From then on, the more that you listen I believe that tremendous good can come into the soul/s of the one/s needing healing! Listen with all your heart and mind and strength and you will see miracles. You and the one/s you listen to deserve the miracles! They will bless you with a more abundant life! One that is filled with peace! And it is this peace that we all need so much of; now more than ever before.
