Peace Through Music   15 y
You Gotta Listen to this Music!! "If you're a fan of world music, then you're in for a treat with Mark Johnson and Jonathan Walls' Playing for Change: Peace Through Music, a film that premiered at the 7th Annual Tribeca Film Festival."

It isn't really a documentary as much as a global concert film, recorded on the streets of New Orleans, Barcelona, South Africa, Tibet and elsewhere, as the filmmakers (Johnson being an award-winni...   read more

Alliance with Plant Spirit   15 y
I saw my plant spirit medicine practitioner today for a healing session; she answered my questions about how plant spirit medicine works. After the session, Spirit answered more of my questions about plant spirit medicine.

I asked my practitioner how she works with plant spirits. She told me that her relationship with plant spirits developed through shamanic journeying. She conveys the plant spirit to me through the ...   read more

Plant Spirit Medicine   15 y
I have been seeing a practitioner of Plant Spirit Medicine for 3 sessions now. She trained and worked with Eliot Cowan for years; he is often credited with bringing the knowledge of Plant Spirit Medicine to the attention of the West (Indigenous peoples have been practicing plant spirit medicine in the Americas for thousands of years, but Westerners, AKA non-indigenous peoples, knew next to nothing about it.) Cowan's book, "Plant Spirit Medicine, The Healing Power of Plants", is a favorite of mine. At the time I first read it, I had never heard of Plant Spirit Medicine. Following are brief explanations of plant spirit medicine. Follow the links for more in-depth information.

”What is Plant Spirit Medicine? Humans and plants have lived together for countless generations. We are family. Our plant relatives are generous and helpful, offering us food and medicine. Like us...   read more

Taino Spirituality Today   15 y
The Taino are the indigenous peoples first encountered by Columbus when he "discovered" the West Indies in 1492. Once decimated by the Spanish Conquest, Taino culture and spirituality today are experiencing a revival: "The Caney Indian Spiritual Circle is an organization devoted to the path of shamanic enlightenment as it was trailblazed by ancient mystics and wise elders of the Taino Native people in the Caribbean islands over four thousand years ago."

The following are excerpts; to read in their entirety, go to the webpages cited: "Our tradition is inspired by the combined prophesies of Aurasurey of Boriken and Guaricheanao of Kuba. It is bas...   read more

Columbus's Shame   15 y
When Columbus "discovered" the West Indies in 1492, a peaceful, agrarian, and matrilineal people who called themselves "Taino" populated the region. Within 50 years, almost all of the Taino tribes were decimated by the Spanish. Today, descendants of the Taino are calling for recognition of their tribe.

Finished reading an excellent children's book called "Anacaona-Golden Flower" by Edwidge Danticat about a woman leader of the Taino tribe who is a well-known historical figure in Haiti but little k...   read more

WhaleDreamers, the DVD   15 y
Just rented this newly released DVD, a fascinating and moving documentary focusing on the Mirning people--declared "extinct" by the Australian government in the 1950's but whose descendants still keep alive the vestiges of their ancient whale dreaming culture--and the 1998 Gathering of 85 Indigenous Elders from around the world to greet the whales and to share their ceremonies and spiritual traditions.

The Power of Women   15 y
In 2003, women of civil war torn Liberia, insisting on a peaceful settlement, locked the male leaders in their meeting room until they made that peace. This momentous event was not reported in the New York Times or the Washington Post. The film "Pray the Devil Back to Hell" documents this story.

Organic White House Garden!!   15 y
I posted a tongue-in-cheek story, "Madam President", that included a reference to a White House organic garden. There's a push to encourage Pres. Obama to replant an organic garden at the White House that historically had been there from the 1800's! Another example of life imitating art...or is it the other way around?

Madam President   15 y
On TV, watched the swearing in of our new president. Lots of people kept talking about what a historic day it was, having the first African American President. I couldn't help but think that things will REALLY be historic when we elect the first openly gay female environmentally-aware Native American. Below are my musings for a "normal day in the (Greened) White House"
