Cinnamon as Medicine

Healing Powers of Ayurvedic Spices

Second to communication in terms of purpose, your body is designed to process food in many wonderous ways. Therefore it makes sense to let food be your medicine.

"In a study at Copenhagen University, patients given half a teaspoon of cinnamon powder combined with one tablespoon of honey every morning before breakfast had significant relief in arthritis pain after one week and could walk without pain within one month.":

I'd recommend using organic cinnamon and truly raw honey.

And when sauteing lipid-soluble spices I'd recommend ghee. "Highly stable, one hundred year old ghee is claimed by the ayurvedic tradition to be even more beneficial than fresh ghee.":

I'm impressed with the fact that just by adding a certain spectrum of spices (i.e. even a curry powder from a pre-packaged blend) a dish can be transformed and thereby elevate one's whole entire eating experience!

“Herbs and spices have medicinal qualities, and they also serve to enhance digestion by stimulating the sense of taste. In awakening this sense they also help man in his journey towards universal thinking. They possess therapeutic properties not yet fully recognized. Different temperaments can be balanced by the discriminate use of suitable seasonings. …”:

I'm also impressed with the following information regarding black pepper:

“… Among the spices, black pepper is the king. It is the most popular and most widely used spice in the world. It has extensive culinary uses for flavoring and preserving foods and is important medicinally. Of the total spices traded internationally pepper accounts for about 34% … South West India is the traditional home of this important spice …”: The Dynamics of Nutrition - By Gerhard Schmidt

I've been adding black pepper to my cooking (since this post). It's a spice that I had eliminated many years ago for health reasons. I now have new appreciation for it!

Just learned from a friend who is an avid student of Ayurveda that in most cases "diseases"[1] are believed to originate in the digestive tract. Diseases are considered to be imbalances of the three humors. "Ayurveda is based on the treatment of three ‘doshas’ (three substances or humors). They are: vadha (promotion), pitha (digestion) and kapha (nourishment). They control all the functions of our life.":

[1] From a New Medicine perspective what is called disease is an innately intelligent biological survival program that has deep meaning for the individual because it was launched by a "shock conflict" within the individual's psyche and as soon as the conflict is resolved the second phase of healing begins.
