Re: I was diagnosed to have a Hiatal Hernia?

Thank you for all the effort; it's late and I will check out all the links y ou sent to me tomorrow. Yes, digestion is the main problem. There is a valve somewhere there that usually keeps the food from not backing up and instead, there is a hernia, which was seen by the endoscopy, one of the tests that I had to endure. As for food coming out, one thing I do know, and have been told is to "chew" my food very well, which I do, not to eat to fast (ie. when you are hungry) and not big portions at one time. I can tell when let's say the last thing I ate was ice cream, followed by the cereal that I ate earlier, and can actually see the chunks that I didn't chew as much.

I've had all the tests that could possibly tell the Drs. and it is pretty clear that it is a hiatal hernia. No infection. Garlic seems to be good for everything it seems. I might add that I have no pain at all when all of this is going on. Occasionally, I have heartburn, but rarely. Tonight, I had a small portion of lean meat with some pasta, and I wanted more, but I limited myself to a smaller portion, and I feel fine.

I also am drinking more water than I usually do, especially at night. I was told to take small sips, and I usually burp when I have something to drink. I'm sure vegetable juices would be fine as well, in fact, I'm not against eating a mostly liquid diet if it had the nutrients. Fish was one of the items that was on the list that I could eat, but it had to be baked. I don't seem to get the munchies these days, but Pretzels would be OK, and the water fills me up so that I don't feel like I have the munchies. There was a definite NO to any carbonated sodas, no coffee, but I can have decaf, if I can tolerate it, and I seem to be able to. Could I have an ulcer? The tests show that I do not have an ulcer. But I still have alot to learn about how to live with this, rather than have an operation to fix it which I told it could be. I'll check with my Dr. re vegetable juices. I'm thinking of tomato juice.

As for diarrheah, I don't have that. I'm not constipated. I think of it as an elastic rubber band that has lost some of it's elasticity somehow. There is something that should close after your food goes down the esophagus, but there is a hernia there (stomach) so it doesn't allow the food to stay down.

I'm learning that eating small portions at different times of the day is the best, otherwise, if there is too much at one time, I'm asking for trouble.

Thank you for your efforts. And I will check out all the links tomorrow.
T.
