Re: Dogs and cats as vegetarians?
That is not what I said at all. My dog eats meat. I do cook it tho. I followed the advise of the raw enthsiasts and put him on raw meat and almost immediately his thyroid crashed and his kidneys showed signs of stress from too much protien, although I didn't figure out what was going on for six months. (This was determined by a holistic vet and a nutritionst after examining his blood work.)
He now eats cooked turkey or chicken with veggies and a small amount of oatmeal, and he is doing fine.
Cats are ususally fed nothing but protien, and unfortunately, they tend to die of kidney failure. It is one of the most common causes of feline death. I just lost my kitty to kidney failure (she was 20), and I controlled it for at least 7 years, by giving her raw meat mixed with steamed veggies and oatmeal, along with a renal supplement, thereby considerably reducing the protein she was getting. She did beautifully on this diet for a long, long time, and died still sleek and chubby (for an elderly cat).
I simply said that I have talked to many professional people in this regard who have told me that dogs an do quite well on a veggie diet. My dog certainly didn't do well on a raw diet, and while I don't dispute that many do, they are not all alike.
