Metformin prevents high morning blood sugars.

Of all diabetic drugs, metformin has the quality of keeping the liver from putting out glucagon during the night and therefore raising morning blood sugars. That is one reason to take metformin at night and why doctors often prescribe metformin with other diabetic drugs.

Often diabetics can have control over daytime blood sugars and their two hour post prandial (two hours after eating) blood sugars are good, but have morning blood sugars that are high. Metformin is useful is this regard.
