I know one lady who swears by Diatomaceous Earth because ants will not walk over it. I've tested this myself by putting it on the floor and they walk around it or go in the opposite direction. So she outlined the entire perimeter of her house with it outside and never sees ants in the summer anymore.
You'd probably have to reapply it during heavy winds or rain though..not sure how that works. I think when it rains it just gets messy and dries again..
Eh..I stick with chemicals.They're just not used in the kitchen or anything. I found that stuff Home Depot sells that you spray to keep a "barrier" up to work great.Home Defense something.
