Hey --

I remember feeling the same thing early on and really being envious of friends who had morning sickness because I felt that their hormones were working more properly, etc. I sort of felt like I wasn't "really" pregnant unless I had that same sickness I did before w/ the miscarriage. I have since talked to a lot of mothers of healthy kids who both did and didn't have sickness and I think it's probably related to so many factors beyond hormones that you can't make a generalization about sickness = healthy pregnancy, etc.

I have been listening to a lot of Iodine information lately and as I mentioned, the most interesting to me is the need for Iodine during pregnancy and nursing/for the first 2 years when all of the brain development is occuring at such a rapid pace. The RDA of Iodine for pregnant women is merely to prevent "cretinism" (or extreme retardation), but deficiency in general has been linked to ADD and lower intelligence. THere's an interview posted with Dr. Flechas at iodine4health.com where he talks about babies who get enough iodine learning thing in an advanced way at 4 months (like "high 5"). I do regret not coming across this information sooner and I would supplement were I to get pregnant again.

And I am surprised that more OB/Gyns don't know about this. I have so many friends with conditions that are symptomatic of iodine deficiency:

ovarian cysts
fibromyalgia
cysts of breast/breast cancer
thyroid conditions

And if you eat a lot of bread or dough products, drink products with brominated vegetable oil, or have consumed a lot of fluoride in your life via municipal water and dental procedures/toothpastes, SSRI's, some allergy medications, etc., use chlorinated water, you have been exposed to chlorine, bromine and fluorine, two members of the halogen "family" on the periodic table. Those can all displace iodine from your body.

Anyway, food for thought!

Laura
