Have you tried dumbbell deadlifts? Close to the same benefits, plus without straps will work your forearms and traps like nobody's business. It doesn't place as much strain on your lower back as much I find.
When I first started, meat and salad was what I craved before I worked out. Unfortunately it haunted me later by making me crash after my run and into my weight workout. I chalked it up to missing some mineral/nutrients, so I started taking multivitamins and got the same thing. This may sound silly, but as long as I was in "hunger" mode I had all the energy I needed. And what I ate after was put to better use you might say. My point is different strokes for different folks, if that is what works for you, that's great. BTW, I love my steaks blue too...they digest better that way.
Do you do anything besides weights for cardiovascular benefit. Just curious.
