Concious intelligent energy? Does your spirit have to be physical?

A Science teacher once told me that gas came from energy and gases formed matter, when he was trying to explain where the mass came from for the big bang.

He could not explain energy to me, but he did agree with me when I said thought is energy and is a detectable energy that can be measured with an EEG.
When I asked him if it was possible that the energy in the beginning could have had an intelligence...He said: I can not say if it is not possible. Then he excused himself and said he would like that energy part over more, and said he never heard of any theorist that explained the energy part in that way.
