Hi In Denial. I can understand your confusion. This has probably caused some stress in your relationship too. My understanding about Herpes 2 is that one can actually harbour the virus without an initial outbreak for years. Then something happens to trigger the outbreak. Usually stress but it is probably a combination of factors. A bad sunburn, stress, illness, anything that supresses the immune system can trigger the outbreak even though you or your wife may have actually been exposed to the virus years ago. I don't know how long you have been married but I can guarantee that herpes 2 is sexually transmitted. I know, I have it too. It's very shocking at first to learn that you have it and my first episode made me very ill. I was so upset and sick I was under doctors orders to stay in bed for 4 days.
After that though the outbreaks were minimal. I also understand that after age 50 the outbreaks are less and less frequent. I have about 1 a year now. I hope this helps a little.
