A line has been crossed...
A line has obviously been crossed.
It seems that there needs to be 2 different types of designers, and for the world to recognize the fact. (In fact, I guess there already are, but it should be more clear).
The 1st designer designs for art. They are the high fashion runway type, who love to drape their creations on tall, skinny women. That's okay (as long as they choose NATURALLY skinny women, and not ones who starve themselves and are about to die). The world should recognize that THESE ARE NOT CLOTHES FOR THE PUBLIC TO WEAR. They are art.
The 2nd type of designer designs clothes for real people to wear. They can have fashion shows, and their models can still be slim although in a realistic way. A mix of models would be nice. You know how there is a Lane Bryant store, and full-figured models? More of that - designs for full figures, designs for short people... more custom designing for REAL PEOPLE.
I don't enjoy seeing overweight people trying to wear the skinny fashions. For example, a bare midriff on a flat six-pack on a magazine (or in the gym) is one thing... a bare midriff that features a big gut of fat hanging over pants in the grocery store is quite another!
While it is good to strive to be at a healthy body weight and physically fit, realistic clothing and model aspirations would help reduce the prevalence of poor body image and eating disorders.
I am not sure, but I think what can be more damaging than the media is knowing someone in real life who is slim and has a great body, yet can eat tons of food and eat anything they want (and doesn't have an ED). An athlete with a high metabolism, for example. And some people aren't athletic but are just like that... sorry, we can't all eat whatever we want. And even that person will probably suffer from ill health at some point.
For example, my cousin. She is in high school. She's very slim and attractive. She can eat cheese dip and chips and ice cream (etc) all day long. But she's an athlete... she is MVP on her soccer team and plays volleyball, tennis, lifts weights, swims, etc. She is ON THE MOVE! Her non-athletic friends simply can't compete with that. They would have to become extremely active, too. If they go out to eat, the friends shouldn't eat the same things that my cousin eats, because they aren't working out for 2 hours a day.
This is a similar principle to a married couple. Usually, the wife will need to face the fact that she shouldn't eat the same portions as the husband. If she does, then she will gain weight while he maintains! (there are exceptions)
America seems caught up with extremes. Extremely white teeth, extremely thin, extremely big boobs, extremely rich, extremely bad behavior, etc...
