Dr. Denmark

beautiful woman and certainly someone I would aspire
to emulate energywise and philosophically. I like how
she says, she does not consider her work work but fun.

I have met a lot of older people since in the 80's
my husband and I and his brother put out a magazine
which was an effort to preserve the local history of
the town where we lived. It won awards for the preservation
of local history and copies are even in the Smithsonian.
The people we interviewed were as interesting as the day
is long and I feel so fortunate to have been able to be
a part of interviewing them and saving their stories since
so often even the families had not even bothered to ask
them about their lives and so many had their histories
brought back to life to pass on to future generations.
I do feel that in looking to the past, and in the case
of alternative medicine, much was passed to us through
folk remedies that allopathic medicine tried to modernize
when the old remedies still work. Fortunately, in our
family, our great grandfather was the country doctor
who rode on horseback and when you go to the local
museum, you can see his medicine bags and saddlebags and
even the gun he carried. Going to a doctor in our house
was the last option since Nana always had a recipe for
a toddy or root tea which had been passed on to her. I think
we have a real treasure in the experiences of our elders and
if we can learn to re-appreaciate them and place value on
their knowledge, then aging will not carry the stigma that
it seems to sometimes have.

I have also been with my own daughter shopping and have seen
two old woman chattering and one will say, now Mama...I
love to say to my own daughter, sweetie, thats you and me
in 30 or 40 years~~! I look forward to being healthy and
quickminded even then, and taking care of my health now
should assure a good chance of reaching my goal. Dr. Denmark
is surely an inspiration for grace in aging...ggg.
