Have you tried using positive affirmations?

I personally like this one:

I forgive myself for harboring any negative thoughts. I resolve to stop doing so. I radiate love and good will to all those around me. I know when I have forgiven others, because I can think of them or meet them in my mind and the sting is gone. I feel at peace.

Beware of suffocating your new roommate by clinging - it happens very quickly and that can ruin any friendship possibility.
