Re: Advice needed for mites.

I would suggest taking the animals to the vet. Yes, I know that the treatment the vet will do is poison. I have pet rats. They got mites from some where. They itched and had little scabs from digging with their teeth and claws. I told the vet that my rat boys had some kind of mites. He took a piece of scotch tape and got samples off each rat. He looked at the scotch tape under the microscope and agreed that my rats indeed had mites. The vet then weighed each rat and calculated a dose. He applied the dose to the back of rats, on their necks, in a place where they could not reach to groom or lick off the medicine. I believed the vet used Revolution medicine. I do not like any kind of medicine and did not want to have to resort to this. However, it was better than having my little rat boys constantly suffering. The rats stopped itching in a few days, the scabs healed and they are fine. I had to steam clean all the things that they came into contact with. I washed all cloth materials and "cooked" them in the clothes dryer. The things I could not steam clean or wash and "cook" in the dryer, I put into the freezer for two days. I only had to do this once and the rats only had to take the treatment once. It was well worth it.

I know of no alternative treatment for mites that works.
