The key you need to bear in mind is keep the carbon on/in the ground...this includes cardboard, wood chips, even whole logs and branches, and even charcoal. Ash is tricky as it depends on from what wood how it gets used {its acidity}.
Certainly devices like Sonic Bloom are cool but there are natural ways man has done this...Round Towers of Ireland, Whale Skin drums of the Northwestern Native Americans, even Didgeridoes of the Aborigines.
