kansas city is a microcosm of new york when it comes to italians. my dad remembers as a kid in arkansas going up to kansas city with his boss to buy fruit and vegetables at the city market downtown. today, you find mennonites, koreans and vietnamese selling on a saturday, but back in the 50's, this impressionable country bumpkin(still touts a 7th grade education) recalls the men at the market all speaking italian.

my first friend in KC was an italian and he showed me his old neighborhood where he grew up, and the houses where people got killed. and even in his coffe shop today, he buys belfonte milk products, not roberts, the other local dairy.

it is still so bad that the kcmo police force is not run by the city. when they were, they were all on the take. kcmo popo is actually a branch of the missouri state police and answerable to the governor, not the mayor of KC.

and the other big ethnic group here of prominence? the irish, of course.
