Wow, didn't know that about the new pope. Oh no, already?
For every one pope, there are millions of Catholics at the bottom living as well as they know how, and God talks to them just as much. Maybe they have more time to listen!

I was always completely devoted to the Catholic Church, it was really the center of my life. But 2 years ago at Christmas I sat down on a beach all day and thought it over. When I came back from that beach I found that I could no longer say "Oh, this church is the most correct and superior." I could no longer trust that any one theology or prayer or ritual, all alone, is enough to make people behave kindly.

At the same time, I have total respect and even reverence for good Catholics everywhere and good religious people everywhere. When someone treats others kindly in God's name, that is a wonderful thing, and I do everything to affirm those people and let them know they are appreciated. So on the one hand, I lost my faith in the Catholic church as the only true path. On the other, it's a great pleasure to go through the world experiencing people in many belief systems finding creative ways to do good things.

By the way I was lucky enough to find a good Metropolitan Community Church and met some magnificent people living brave loving lives. If you have not been there, you are in for a treat. I met lots of nice Catholics!
