I found the key to this type of situation to be forgiveness. Parents do what they do ... because it's what they know how to do. Seems obvious ... but surely it's true? If they were another person, they would do different things ... but they're not. If they could turn back the clock ... they may do things differently ... but they can't.

I learned to forgive my father and found it the greatest release from these feelings, my situation though was quite different to yours.

You have a great opportunity to be who you want to be. I found Anthony Robbins' book "Awaken the Giant Within" very inspirational in this respect. But you need to move on from the restrictions you feel your father has placed on you ... and if I was you I would do this through forgiveness. Write down all you feel bad about ... and go through a ceromony of forgiving him for each point.
