Dear Catawba,

I agree with the other three persons
who responded to your post.

Yes, fresh coconut "meat" is wonderful. I'm lucky to live in a
place where coconut trees abound.

But DO be careful opening them up!
Don't be macho and use a machete.
Blueduck is right about drilling
holes in the coconut to get at
the water. Then I place the coconut
in the corner of the concrete stairs
leading up to my apt -- a place
where it can't move -- and whack
it with a hammer until the shell
cracks. It's still a messy job,
but you won't accidentally slash
yourself, as is possible with a
machete.

Enjoy your fresh coconut!
