The rates of autism started rising after 1991 because they changed the requirements to be diagnosed as autistic. Babies appear to develop normally, but only show signs of autism when they are a toddler because at this age they begin to communicate and socialise - as autistic children lack in these areas, this is when autism is diagnosed. There is work on a blood test for autism, which can be done soon after birth - I believe that it is based around glutathione (sp?) levels in the blood. The link with MMR is a casual one based on when the vaccination is given. Scientific studies have now (certainly in science's opinion) disproved this link. I'm not sure who funded this study. If you look this study up and can get the full text, they should declare their funding and any conflicts of interest.
