Re: Article-SARS could be Chinese Bio-weapon: Russian Expert
There has been some suggestion that if China was developing a bio-weapon, then spreading it among their population was planned, and has already been countered by the government with selective spraying, food-born inoculation, water supply, etc.
Having been to China, and seen their industy, I would offer that perhaps this is a weaponized "bug" that got out of the bag. The Chinese do not have nearly the quality control that many western nations have. Yet China has many western-educated scientists and a desire to have NBC weapons. Russia, who I would say has advanced quality control, had 100 people die of an anthrax spill. This prompted them to come clean on having as much of the bio-weapon as they did. History has shown that communist counties have problems with agencies living up to the quality/quanity levels their paper documentation claims.
Several western labs have said that there is not a lineage link between the coronavirus seen to this point and the current SARS virus. They are of the same family, but don't have the tell-tale signs of common mutations which occur as a virus spreads.
So far the case fatality rate seems to be around 5%. Cutaneous anthrax is <1%, inhalation is 45%, ingested botulinum toxin is 5-10% and tularemia, if left untreated, is somewhere around 30%. This would put SARS on the low end of the effective scale, if death were the outcome of the weapon.
If causing damage to the healthcare and economy of developed nations(ie. Western) which rely on free transport of people and goods, than is is a great weapon.
I feel confident that this is a weaponised "cold". The question I see as important, was it let out or did it escape?
