This is a side issue, but in many states, including California, only a "medical practitioner" can order tests or even receive them. If you have a test conducted by a California-based lab, it is illegal for them to provide you the results -- you have to obtain them through your doctor. Some states have gotten past this "Doctors save us from ourselves" stupidity -- I think that Oregon is one -- and allow patients a greater role in obtaining lab tests and results. As far as reviewing medical files, in California they must be revealed to you within 5 days of a written request (link below). I imagine other states have, to varying degrees, similar statutes. You can determine this quickly by inserting your jurisdiction into the following Google search string, for example: "California right inspect medical records."
