Re: My brother Mike's diet plan
Inquiring minds don't wanna know......:) I eat everything and anything. We buy organic as much as possible and we do not buy items that contain hydrogenated or hydrolyzed ingredients. We stay away from chemicals as much as possible (the shorter the ingredient list, the better). We eat lots of fruits and veges, raw nuts, I prepare a protein mix in the a.m, loaded with Flax seed, walnuts, tofu, uncooked oatmeal and the fruit du jour.
No soda - some organic juice, distilled water, red and yerba mate teas. Lunch can be some of the Spelt, Hemp or Men's bread with peanut butter or Smart Balance butter.
We do plan a vegetarian day 1-2x per week, however, I have organic anti-biotic steak and ground beef and chicken plenty of times too.
Some of our favorite daily items are: raw garlic, blueberries, walnuts, tomatoes, bananas, grapes, apples. We use the 'natural' tortilla and even potato chips that are so readily available.
We have not had milk in 3 years, however, I do consume cheese once or twice a week. We use Rice or Oat 'milk'.
This is my maintenance diet. It certainly is not the best diet, however, I feel good on it. I have not had a cold in 18 months. I was quite used to 4 strep throats a winter in the past. I would alter my consumption if health issues dictated such. For instance, I was a huge drinker of green and black tea. I went through a
kidney stone once. Once. I will never taste green or black tea again. I would do the same with my meat consumption, etc., should my cholesterol rise or if some other illness returned.
Friends laugh when they open our freezer and see all the nuts, breads and Amy's Organic bean burritos. They gasp when they open my bro's. :)
My brothers cholesterol has tested as low as (if I remember exactly) 135. My last test (2 years ago) was 170.
He completely will keep this up at med school. His apartment was picked partly on the layout of the kitchen, etc. Pitt has several good organic markets and he intends on joining a co-op out there.
My wife goes to Curves 3x per week. We weightlift at home at least 3x per week. We walk almost daily. We also have an elliptical bike that doesn't get used much in the summer. We do bicep and back one day, chest and tricep another, legs on sunday. If time permits we'll start the cycle over in the same week (ie, a 4th workout).
