Thats why in Quran, it nips it in the bud, because when the parent is merciful and kind, they teach the children to be merciful and kind and that creates a closed circle of love and grace.
I m not saying all people abide by the commandments but its there to lean on for guidance. Then the verse above is a reminder for the children who have grown to have mercy "just as your parent/s had mercy for you when you were young"

In Muslim countries there is no such thing as old folks homes. SubhanAllah.
