I dont think you risk death, that is not a part of Islam.
The Prophet Mohamed , peace be upon him would offer protection for the non muslims of Madina. So much hatred is spread about Islam, yet it does not stem from it.
It was forbidden to touch churches or christians or other religions, and the non muslim bisnesses, homes were under full protect by the Islamic government, they were not required to fight for their country at a time of war, and if they wanted to leave they would be free to do so.
So You were raised a Muslim, but never really were a Muslim in your heart?
Its the hatred and strictness that is associated with Islam, and this was not part of Islam as it was brought to us by the Prophet Mohamed peace be upon him. Rather Almighty God sent us ALL the prophets the last being Prophet Mohamed, upon whom be peace. Confirming the scripture before him , the injeel ( the bible) and the tawra ( the torah)-
Islam is the middle way-

"And there is no compulsion in Religion"- Quran
