it exists to make money. Another name for this is "snake oil"; a product that causes the problem it proclaims to fix. The fiber and clay in the product turns into the ropy tar like substance that comes out. In other words, muciod plaque is a myth, only experienced by those who have taken the fiber/clay that produces it.
