you have to break them in half. careful, they are brittle, even with the chrome-looking plating that is on some of them.
i score them along the midline and use a pair of pliers and my hand to gently break them. i have ruined a couple this way, but i have used the smaller pieces as well for rings and things. on some, i even got good enough to break that slender middle transition portion out ot make the magnets more pure in its polarity.
get a compass. the needle that points to north points to the negative side. mark a magnet right away and use that to test. you can make the needles on some compasses switch poles with this much strength.
you should be able to get the magnets to stick to your fingers by putting them on either side of your finger - they are that strong. i use a configuration of electrical tape and strips of plastic milk jug to make my rings. i use the plastic to stiffen them so they dont collapse in on themselves.
