Yes, there's been changes..

God's Word may be eternally settled, but His dealings with His people are always changing, transforming, evolving, unfolding, revealing, etc.
To make a long story shorter, let me put it this way. Religious name tags, religious ceremonies, protocols, traditions, do a lot in the way of making people ~feel~ like they are close to God, but in reality they are just following hollow rules and regulations without any real spiritual revelation. Countless of people have become tired and wary of such staid and predictable ceremonies, and have decided to congregate with other believers who look closer into the Word of God in order to practice a purer devotion. So compared to these fresher and more genuine experiences, some people go on to say that others still back in the old traditional churches are "not even Christians". Of course that isn't always true, as true Christians will bear good fruit recognizable by all, but only God truly knows the hearts.
It is misleading to assume that just because a church or people call themselves non-denominational that they are or will always be right on centre, and that they will never fall prey to dead religious practices. Anything can become rote or force of habit, while true spirituality is always fresh and life giving. The only way to achieve it is to stay closely plugged into God Himself, and that is easier said than done.
