Re: Causes of cheilitis

Is your cheilitis exfoliative?

Yes, I think so.

peeling every few days?

If I apply vaseline (or oil, moisturizing creme...) the cycle is the shortest : 3 or 4 days. The dead skin is paper like, it's reallly thin, almost transparent.

If I apply nothing on it and if I'm very cautious when I speak, take a shower,... the cycle can last 3 weeks. The skin is bigger, no more transparent. I would say the skin is like a "kellog's corn flakes" after 2 or 3 weeks, a little yellow.

Did your symptoms start after taking meds like accutane?
did you lick pick your lips?

As a child, I was anxious and I was used to pick / lick my bottom lip. But the problem started when I was 17 years old. I bite my upper lip (in the center) and then the cycle began. The irritated area (red) extends progressively to the border and the bottom lip (it's due to saliva probably)
I never took accutane. I take Minocycline (less strong than accutane) and it was after the start of the cheilitis (not sure but almost sure)

That white stuff looks like dead skin so k recon its xfoliative but im not sure, need more info from you. I get dead skim similar to that whenm i wake up

In order to be sure, we have got all the same problem, I post the following photos.

Day 0 : we can see no dead skin, but the irritated area (red)

Day 2 : when the cycle has just started. The mobility of the lips is still good at this time.

Day 4 : we can see the borders of the dead skin

After 1 week and the morning (white stuff in the mouth)
http://img233.exs.cx/img233/5338/chlit48wb.jpg

After the shower (day 10 approximately): it's bigger and it appears more white

I think it's necessary to be sure that people here are talking about the same condition.

Good luck to all

PS : for me Protopic doesn't work at all. I have got the best results with vaseline and oil on it.
