Here is a quote I found indicating that too much of the ascorbic acid version of vitamin C depletes your trace mineral stores, contrary to just being "harmlessly flushed away":
"the devastating consequences of trace mineral depletion are exacerbated by excess vitamin intake. Vitamin C and the B vitamins are the culprits. …Vitamin C is particularly harmful. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) cannot be eliminated via the kidneys without first being combined with a mineral or trace mineral. So, in other words, every molecule of excess vitamin C that is dumped into a person's urine has to carry with it a magnesium or a potassium or a zinc or a copper" The article went on to discuss the widely promoted fallacy of excess ascorbic acid being harmelessly flushed away.
It is possible that mineral ascorbate versions, instead of ascorbic acid, can be taken in higher doses without this problem.
