The obscene mark-up on prescription drugs.
Dear Karen,
You mentioned that you'd been taking Paxil. I thought
you might be curious to know the markup on a bottle
of 100 tablets. The ingredients in that bottle cost
the manufacturer $7.60. The bottle retails for $220.27.
That's a markup of 2,898 percent.
But Paxil is a bargain compared to most prescription
drugs, including the infamous Prozac.
A bottle of Prozac (100 tabs) sells for $247.47.
The ingredients in that bottle cost the manufacturer
$0.11 cents! That's a markup, Karen, of 224,973 percent.
Want one more? A bottle of Xanax (100 tabs) sells for
$136.79. The ingredients in that bottle of Xanax cost
the manufacturer one-fourth of one penny: $0.024 cents.
That's a markup of 569,958 percent.
Only in America will people pay truly obscene amounts of money for products that will make them seriously
ill, and eventually kill them. We have all fallen down
the rabbit hole.
Good luck with your efforts to get off prescription
drugs, Karen. I will keep you in my prayers.
Blessings,
Owen
