What you may not realize is that that threat was real. It took hundreds of thousands of programmers several years of work to fix most of the problems. As a Y2K programmer, I spent the better part of 2 years finding errors in old programs and fixing them. New Years eve 2000, our entire programming staff was in the office up to 4:00 AM making sure that everything went smoothly, while the rest of the world enjoyed the celebration.

As for those who stockpiled gold, food, etc, I did because I knew exactly what could happen if not everything was fixed. Really, it was not because the problem was so bad, it was because people do not know what to do and they panic.
